Jaafar Taoun is an Iraqi-Swedish visual artist, born in Basra in 1963. He studied graphic art at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad between 1980 and 1986 and has since pursued an artistic career spanning numerous experiences and exhibitions in Iraq, Sweden, and various Arab and European countries.
Taoun’s work is rooted in the human experience and the relationship between the individual, place, and memory; themes such as home, the city, family, departure, nostalgia, and dreams recur as elements and symbols in his art. His practice oscillates between abstraction and figuration, where shapes, lines, and colors intertwine to create a visual world imbued with poetic and contemplative dimensions.
His work is characterized by the interplay of symbols, color, and line, and by an effort to distill forms to their essence without severing their connection to human memory. In his art, place transcends mere geography to become a space for memories, belonging, and transformation, while the human figure remains a central focus.
Jaafar Taoun has held numerous solo and group exhibitions and participated in diverse artistic and cultural projects, continually evolving his practice and seeking a visual language that bridges his Iraqi roots with an openness to contemporary artistic expression.
